African walking Safari-our top walking Safari hotspots

>

Well, thank God it was only in the movies! Today, is an African walking safari around the ants pants of adventure holidays. It is as close as you get to a real African nature romp, even if you don't walk!

Top African Safari walking destinations

Taking a walking safari in Africa is not as simple as your walking boots and heading off into the sunset. To begin, you'll probably end up as the main course at some carnivores dinner setting.

Well organised walking excursions run by people who know their stuff are the only way to both your security and viewing pleasure, especially if you're new to the whole African Safari scene.

South Africa has two ideal and attractive walking safari options ... the Ngala Private Game Reserve in Kruger National Park and the Phinda Private Game Reserve.

Both excursions are professional organized with the safety of the biggest factor but you get the chance to get up close to nature. Bird lovers will in all their glory especially in Phinda and be warned, you may need to be dragged kicking and screaming away!

Botswana

One of the characteristics of a walking safari in Botswana is the extremely high standards with regard to safety. The guides themselves are just about the best in the business and "are the ropes" from a very young age.

Botswana is a walking safari lovers dream. It has the enormous diversity that will fit with lovers of flora or fauna. The habitats are exactly what you would expect to find on Safari.

Zimbabwe and Zambia

Zimbabwe is not far behind Botswana in the quality of guides offer. Walking through the African Bush is no fun, but these guys and gals are so well trained that any issues are kept to a minimum, as they were in at all.

Zimbabwe has obviously experienced somewhat of an unstable political climate in recent times and if you are considering a trip there, contact your local travel agent for the lowdown on security.

Zambia also has an extremely high reputation for quality hosting walks. In fact, it occurs regularly in discussions if we walk in the whole of Africa. Once again, is one of the reasons why it is so popular because of its excellent and knowledgeable hosts.

Preparation is important before heading out on an African walking safari. It's not just the clothes that you'll have to wear, but you really need to make sure that you don't have any health issues.

Hiking in the mountains-check it again!

A lot of people planning to vacation in Snowdonia, the Scottish Highlands or the Lake District, this summer, consider a walk on the hills and mountains. If you're planning a high walks, apart from your condition and how sore your feet will get one of your main considerations it again.

>
>

Before you begin on your walk you will get together your walking shoes, your backpack to fill with provisions but do not forget to CHECK it again! The Met Office has predictions for the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland. Even if it seems that it's going to be a fun day that you can never be certain what will sweep across the hills. If you Ben Nevis or Snowdon walks you can be on the hills of most of the day – plenty of time for the weather to change! Know and be prepared for the weather conditions will add to your enjoyment of your day, and will keep you safe.

Weather in the mountains is very unpredictable-almost unbelievable so sometimes. It is quite possible that you for a beautiful clear day for your climb will choose, and will begin the day at a tee shirt with the sun beating down on your back.

If you are starting to rise you may find that cloud begins to form, and the Summit will be hidden! You will be safe if you go to the well trodden paths, but it really is not advisable to go too far from the track. The cloud and mist can form very quickly and very thick and it is very easy to quickly be disoriented and lose your way and spoil your hiking holiday.

Another thing you will notice as you climb the mountain is that the temperature will decrease. It will undoubtedly much colder at the top than the bottom – especially in low cloud. The average temperature at the Summit of Ben Nevis is-1 degree Celsius. You will need to take a jumper, even if you start on a hot summer day, and should also have a waterproof in case of low cloud or fog-this can be very wet, and if you do not have enough prepared, your clothes soaked.

Visit http://www.mountainwalk.co.uk/weather.html to see examples of weather changes it runs Snowdon and Ben Nevis. The photos on this page are all taken on the same walk on an early August day until the Watkins path of Mount Snowdon. The day started without a cloud in the sky-three hours later we were scrambling by thick cloud and near gale force winds, get very wet. Once the Summit of Snowdon no photo opportunities reached was-apart from the ability to see anything through the cloud, there was also the strong winds that blow up hikers from the top of the cairn threatened!

Snowdon has the advantage of its top cafe, although it can get very busy. When you feel you can Snowdon walk that you have achieved something, even if fog spoils the view. And on top of that you can make a cup of tea or hot soup to warm you on the way down-a luxury not found on many peaks!

And to show mountains have the same typical weather, the same Web page shows a walk of Ben Nevis. The beginning of the hike up has the sun shines, but the top shrouded in fog!

The lesson is be prepared-and especially etc in late spring or early autumn where would you finding yourself treated by snow on the higher peaks and hills.

And if you're a novice hiker is best to avoid the worst weather of winter months completely unless you with an experienced guide.

Pat Ransom has been running both Snowden and Ben Nevis and encourages others to do the same on the website http://www.mountainwalk.co.uk/index.html. A keen photographer's site is filled with photos of both the mountains and the surrounding areas.

Hiking in Slovenia-the spectacular Julian Alps and the beautiful Soca River Valley

In a tiny Slovenian hamlet tranquillity reigns and village life is still dominated by the seasonal routines-driving the sheep up to high pastures when the snows clear, the daily process of turning their milk into cheese, hay-making (the meadows need to be cut 4 times a year-usually by hand!), mushroom-picking in the autumn and tending abundant little vegetable gardens to ensure a supply of fresh greens throughout the year. This calm, pastoral scene is set beneath the stunning, limestone peaks of the Julian Alps, which soar dramatically above the villages and hamlets on the rolling wellmeadow country below.

The Julian Alps are the easternmost outpost of the Alpine range that stretches in a crescent across southern central Europe. They are named in honour of Julius Caesar (Cividale, just across the border in Italy, was founded by Caesar as Forum Iulii). The highest peak is Mount Triglav at 2, 864m and the beautiful emerald So
a River rises in the heart of the Julian Alps, cutting a serpentine valley southwards into Italy, where it becomes the Isonzo.

A unique feature of these mountains is that they formed the front line of what became known as the Isonzo Front, during World War One. Between 1915 and 1917, the Italians faced the Austro-Hungarians on a battlefield like no other-the peaks and ridges of the high Alps-and today, there is still a lot of fascinating evidence or that conflict in the shape of lines or trenches, caves dug into the mountainsides, and some poignant memorials to the fallen, high up near the peaks.

2007 marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Caporetto, which saw a combined Austro-Hungarian and German force overwhelm their Italian opposition at the town of Caporetto, in what is now Italy, and advance to within 70 miles of Venice. This breakthrough marked the culmination of 2½ years of bitter armed struggle amongst the formidable mountain peaks and high passes of the Julian Alps, where the awesome terrain made for supremely difficult conditions in which to fight.

Terrible terrain for battle undoubtedly, but the Julian Alps are majestic, soul-fortifying landscapes to walk through and explore in peacetime. And peace is what the friendly inhabitants or Kobarid (formerly Caporetto) and the surrounding villages enjoy in great abundance today.

>
>

The walking is superb, and very varied. One can stroll down through the woods, accompanied by birdsong and the sound of mountain streams tumbling over waterfalls hidden amongst the trees. In the valley, these streams join the rushing, turquoise-blue waters of the Soca.

It is a lovly River, tumbling over the rocks and hurtling through narrow defilés on the short journey to the Adriatic, while on the plateau above is beautiful, there is a tiny, frescoed chapel, beautiful waterfalls and flower-filled meadows. A walk on the slopes and saddles of the Julian Alps themselves invariably yields breathtaking views across the valley to Italy, or into the wild, empty expanse of the Triglav National Park. Occasionally, one stumbles across a collapsed trench or an overgrown gun-yard, high on a windy ridge, but nature's softening of the scars, and the sheep gently grazing on the gentians all around, are a reminder that there is more than a little truth in the adage "Pax Vincit Omnia '.

Slovenia has a very healthy population of wolves, lynx, and brown bears, although you are unlikely to meet any of them (the latter are said to have come north in large numbers to escape the upheavals following the break up or Yugoslavia-bears like a bit of peace and quiet). The forests are home to red deer, roe deer and wild boar, and in these mountains chamois and ibex can also be found. Pine and beech martens are present, as are hares, yellow jackets and foxes. There is wealth of bird-life, including grouse and black grouse, birds of prey (golden eagle, buzzard, hawk, white-tailed eagle), owls (tawny owl, Ural owl, long-eared owl and eagle owl) and woodpeckers (green, black and grey). If you walk in the woods after rain you are almost certain to see the spectacular gold and black mottled skin or a salamander.

Slovenia is home to some 3 000 plant species. The majority of the most interesting-of which 70 are endemic and so found only in Slovenia-are 'Alpines '. These include the purple Zois Bellflower, Wulfen's (pink) primrose, Triglav Hawksbeard and many others. Look out for the spectacular mountain lilies and numerous types of orchid. In general the climate and location contribute to lush meadow vegetation and varied deciduous woodland-characterized by well-managed beech forest.

The walking in this region is rewarding any time between May and October. In the spring, the upland meadows are thick with flowers, including many varieties of orchid, and snow lingers picturesquely on the mountain peaks. Summer can be hot, but the air is usually refreshing above 1500m and there are plenty of shady walks to choose from and cool mountain streams to paddle in. October offers crystal clear days and beautiful autumn colours.

There are plenty of activities available in the area. The So a River and its tributaries are superb for organised activities like white water rafting, canoeing, hydrospeed and canyoning. It is also possible to fish for the marbled trout which is unique to these waters. There are also tandem paragliding flights, horse-riding and mountain biking to be enjoyed. There is an open car-train from Most na So I to Bohinjska Bistrica, which enables you to visit the beautiful lakes or Bled and Bohinj for the day. The little town of Tolmin has a farmer's market on a Saturday, selling all manner of delicious seasonal treats, whilst a drive to the head of the So
a Valley really takes the breath away, culminating in 25 hair-pins to the Vr I
Pass. The small market town of Kobarid is home to an award-winning museum focusing on the battles of the WW1 Isonzo/So
a front. If you wish to venture across the border, you could spend the day in the charming Italian town of Cividale, with its medieval centre, Celtic hypogeum, Lombard temple, 15th C cathedral, and museums.

There are daily flights from the UK to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, and regular low-cost flights to Trieste (Italy) too, from where is it only 1 ½ hours drive on the border to the So
a River area.

Walking specialist tour operator Upland Escapes offer flexible holidays in the Julian Alps and Soca River area, based in a traditional rural village, in comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. The route begins in the Valley of the lot, and includes Lose Hill, Edale Cross and parts of child and win Hill, among others, before finishing where the adventure began. Accommodation is available in Buxton, which is probably the largest environment. Other locations that would be a viable option to stay if this is the challenge for you is would Tideswell, Creswell, or Hope Valley itself.

In the Lake District, the Scafell Pike-classic is a pleasant walk of approximately 10 miles and is probably the most well known in the area. The hike hikers can be at the highest point in England (978 m), and, not surprisingly, it offers spectacular views during the walk, with mile after mile of beautiful scenery on a clear day. Hikes in the Lake District of Hassness

The Lake District is a region that is well known for the many walks by Alfred Wainwright, a famous writer and fell walker of Lancashire. His legendary "Pictorial guide to the Lakeland Fells" guide book has been used as a measure of English ends run for decades a spike in popularity with the recently televised has "walks" and "Wainwright's Coast to Coast" on the BBC.

In the programs goes the presenter, Julia Bradbury, on an extended United Kingdom vacation hiking, tracking the routes and descriptions laid down Wainwright. On a guided UK walking holiday in the Western Lake District you will have the chance to explore Wainwright's favorite part of the world, visiting some of the 200 or so fells that he wrote so passionately about and so detailed.

Hassness House, located about thirty miles to the Northwest of Kendal, is an ideal base in the Western Lake district for a number of United Kingdom hiking holidays routes. It shares a forest clearing with the Dalegarth Guesthouse, but otherwise is isolated in a quiet area with beautiful view on the Western fells. From here you can really start a variety of walking in the English Lake District routes to mountain peaks, rolling hills, dramatic valleys and around the Great Lakes.

The difficulty depends on the guided itineraries that you can decide to choose. There are ideal departure dates during the months of September and October, with some guided English walking holiday in the Lake District also scheduled around Christmas.

Buttermere is a more not far from Hassness House, situated in the Centre of some of the most picturesque mountain peaks. It is a mile and a quarter at its widest with a path around the edge, and here you can look up on production volume and high Stile. Hay mountains is a hill fell that of Buttermere seems to be assembled, such as a Cornish pasty. There are mountain lakes under the knuckles of rock on top. Four miles away is the very different high stile, which is more than eight hundred metres high, and you can see for long distances from the top.

This is a beautiful secluded area of the United Kingdom to walk without the daily hassle and stress of modern life. Hassness House itself, is a home away from home and since there is almost no mobile reception in the Lakes, you can count on a UK hiking holidays here as a refuge from the constant distraction of modern technology and professional lives.

Hiking and camping

Are you interested in closer to nature? Love you walk and sleeping under the stars or under sail at least? If you do, is a walking or hiking and camping vacation, you might like a hiking and camping holiday gets you out in the fresh air, you can observe nature first hand and cost you little to start. In short, hiking and camping are the perfect blend, if you're looking for a healthy, cheap holiday outdoors.

Not only that, but you can go only with a few good books, take a lover, take a friend or family. All in all, you have many alternatives available for you if you want to walk out into the wild blue yonder on foot.

There are a few ways to have a vacation of this species. You can book in a hiking and camping site or you can literally just head off. If you have children with you than the campsite is a necessity, but otherwise the decision is yours, but it should be kept in mind, that camping out site is or may be illegal. Violation is definitely illegal as a nuisance of yourself, wild animals coercion without proper reason, damaging trees or property and strewn is caused.

So, if you're new to hiking and camping, you will probably be better off to a hiking and camping site or the Park. Don't be put off by this thought, some of them are really huge. Check out the Poconos and other national parks for example.

There is no doubt that the price is a factor in the choice of a camping vacation for many young people, but it is rarely the only reason why people want to go away and sleep under the stars. Getting back to the nature and bird and animal watching his other mundane reasons.

If you are interested in this kind of vacation, you bear in mind that walking and camping very popular hobbies too late. They were always popular, it is a fact, but they in the 1980s and 1990s waned, and are now seeing a renaissance. So, do your homework, think about where you might want to go, get some brochures or look on line and book early. Yes, nowadays have to book early to get in the best hiking and camping parks.

A final word of caution, if you decide to go off in the wilderness outside a park, people know where you are. Take your mobile phone and a few extra batteries fully charged and say when you go phone that you're safe and be sure that you stick to it. It is very expensive as Air-Sea Rescue are called unnecessarily.

Sometimes the best way to enjoy yourself in solitude and walking out in the open air offers this or if you want to group to have fun than this can also be done. Hiking shoes make for Easy walking

The basic aim of wearing shoes should make it easier for us to get around on foot. Shoes provide a cushion for our feet and also protect them against rough surfaces. Think of it as insulation of the outdoor elements. For example, can't hot under the Sun be felt by the sole of a shoe.

Our urgent needs for footwear now relate the right kind of shoes for the appropriate occasions. We have shoes for work and formal events, shoes for casual days as sneakers, flip-flops for summer days and lazing, and then of course there are shoes for sport. We are more wary of shoe types such as they are used in different environments.

>
>

Two things should always be taken into account when buying new shoes. First of all, Think about how you're going to wear those shoes. They are casual or formal? Will they most of jeans or pants compliment you own one? This is important if you want good value getting your shoes. Secondly, think function. If you need waterproof shoes for the winter, don't buy suede for example. You have shoes for the gym or jogging, make sure that they are suitable for sporting activities.

Your footwear should be adapted to run in the environment they are placed. If you're an outdoor person who loves hiking, for example, you must absolutely a few specialized hiking boots to help you along your way. Nature may be inexcusable, so if the technology is there, you need to.

Hiking boots are specialized pieces of equipment that allow you to get the most daunting of landscapes. Because of the thick soles and increased only support, will absorb the effects of jump down rocks unevenly or stepping on stones. It will also prevent sand and thorns getting into your boots, while also waterproof for times when you should waterfalls or marshes.

Have you walking along in an old pair of walking shoes that simply are no longer sufficient? It's time to upgrade to something better that is sure to make your hiking experience. Buy a couple of Gore-Tex walking shoes and you won't be sorry. With a waterproof and breathable membrane, you'll be prepared for each route and all weather conditions.

Hiking shoes can also double up as walking shoes. Have you ever been to a new city on holiday and found that your feet were killed you when you return to your hotel room? Well, make a better decision next time. Take your walking shoes and you'll save your feet on your next vacation.

The right pair of shoes walking can make a long walk a ton of fun, while the wrong pair can be the source of foot misery long after the walk is over. You can join Mary Simons on hikingshoesguide.com to learn more about choosing the right pair of shoes walking to suit your needs.

Walking holidays In Ireland

With the fast pace of living today things are so busy and rush that we certainly be missing the simpler pleasures in life. Often the best way to get more experience to slow down, take time to watch and listen, be prepared to stop and wait. But to do this, we must walk. Take a walk, a hike or even a walk.

>
>

Ireland is a perfect walking holiday destination. From the beautiful shores of Antrim, Donegal and the sloping landscape and beautiful mountains of Kerry. For the walkers in the know, Ireland is a well-kept secret-breathtaking landscapes, inspiring vistas and away from the hustle and bustle. Your thinking and you walk we have collected together our favorite walks in Ireland-that you can use when planning your route.

The sheep-main road will take you right to the tip of the sheep's head peninsula in the South West of Ireland. Bantry Bay is located on the North and Dunmanus Bay to the South, connected by a narrow ridge of mountains culminating in Seefin Hill.

You can choose to run all 26.5miles of the Burren way, on the occasion of the Clare coastline, Cliffs of Moher and crossing of the limestone plateau. Or you can do walk the short section along the Burren Way Green Road. It is a wonderful spring walk with lots of wild flowers.

Walking the Kerry Way brings you to the foothills of the series, by means of Killarney National Park and the shores of the Lakes of Killarney and follows old green roads, mountain paths and small country roads. All 120 mile walk or your favorite section.

The road of Dingle Peninsula of Dingle to Irelands most beautiful and special places. You'll walk by the Dingle Gaeltact where Gaelic is the spoken language and if you stop and wait a while you will enjoy the live music, dance and culture that is part of the daily life of the area. Just south of Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains. You can iterate through the more filled valleys of Glendalough and Luggala walk or take a stroll through the beautiful villages such as Enniskerry. The Wicklow Way is usually gentle walking that would fit in with the most levels of walkers.

Victim excursions in Grand Canyon National Park apparently died from Heat-national parks Traveler

Grand Canyon National Park officials have identified a hiker who died in a remote area of the Park as a man of Kansas 30-year-old.

>
>

Gavin c. Smith, Lawrence, Kansas, and four friends to tips down into the Canyon for a day excursion Tuesday along the itinerary of lava Falls near Tuweep on the verge of North Park. initial according to a survey, the party did about halfway down the Colorado River when Mr. Smith turned back around 9 a.m., saying he felt tired and was low on water.

While four out of that other continued down the trail, later separated, with two decide to camp for the night near the river and the other two decide to hike back to the top of a circle to their vehicle.

Body of Mr. Smith has been found by one of his companions of hiking late Tuesday afternoon, approximately 100 metres from a parking lot adjacent to where the route begins.

While the Park officials say that it seems that Mr. Smith died from heat-related complications, you will perform an autopsy.

Where to hike with fido-Ottawa Citizen

I confess, off the top, which are a cat person and, in my opinion, one of the most endearing qualities of cats is that you don't have to take it for walks. You can try, but will only work if go where the cat was going anyway.

Dogs, however--dogs living walking.Dogs are, in fact, the perfect companions for outdoor mentality in this time of year. beside you Trot along a forest trail, nose to the ground and in the air, intoxicated by the tail, stinging environment that provide society, protection and motivation--in one package, two words-wiggly, intensely grateful.

So it's too bad that are canis non grata in many natural shelters abundant in this region. Unless they are on leashes, that is.

Leashes: which is like trying to walk with the Lasso tied together for dogs healthy, fit. dog Leashes are beautiful, purse for the arthritic, overweight or obsessively eager to please--that it is she that talking, border collies! --but have a rope around his neck is not the most natural way to many canines.Cats not would put with it for a minute.

There are off-leash parks in the city, of course, some with small capillary bleeding in trails near trees anemic. But that is not; that is excursions on foot. What is in short supply are 10-a-20 kilometres travelled, on rocky hills and along the granite cliffs, through open meadows and gurgling, hiking on streams that offer diversity, fatigue and reward hard-earned a packed lunches.

These havens exists unofficially--a path inconspicuous, noticed only by subway dog-owning, could wind through the land not built on the edge of prizi, or through the fields of farmers on the outskirts of town. other owners of dog-walking paths rough under hydro lines, or along the railway along the River, under used (particularly in Chelsea, Wakefield, where you should keep an ear peeled for the steam train tourism is facing walkers.)

More Rails-to-bike paths in this area--large pressed substances and absolutely flat--allow dogs without leashes. It's not exactly excursions, but these routes (including the Parc linéaire Basso, Que. towards Maniwaki and trail K & P in Calabogie) offer good, long walks, no guilt.

In his book invaluable, hiking trails, the Ottawa national capital region and beyond, author Michael Haynes surveys some regional routes 50, indicating if dogs are allowed, leashed, a-leashed, or not at all., and the picture is not entirely bleak.

Gatineau Park

Inside the Park, (the most popular destination local excursions and more accessible) approximately 95 percent of the trails dogs welcome--but on leashes. Same goes for the trails of the National Commission of the capital city and the Greenbelt.

Three trails are marked with dog ear throughout the year. These include the popular Lauriault itinerary, a walk of about four kilometres through hardwood forest, along a rocky escarpment and past a waterfall tumbling adjacent holding Mackenzie King. This is a popular and accessible, where there are likely to meet other dog-walkers--generally a congenial group.

The very shortest path Sugarbush, near the center of the visitor NCC Scott road, is predominantly flat, wide and ideal for running with your dog leashed, although, to 1.3 kilometres, you want to do some loop.

For a longer trip, the trail of Wolf nine kilometres, off street parking 13 Meech Lake, will offer you and your pet a vigorous and rewarding workout fall--particularly because the climb culminates with a spectacular view from a rocky outcropping of the Ottawa River Valley. trail skyline, near Kingsmere, accessible from parking 7, is another dog-friendly destination, almost as long and mostly wooded.

Be warned, however, that the CNC will warn anyone caught with a dog untethered, and, after several warnings, your name is entered in a list.Once listed, risk to a minimum $ 100 fine. Although it is not at that, this threat--strengthened each starting point--can be cast to a pleasant trip a pall or transform also loyal citizens, of middle class weapon caches stealthy.

These caveats aside, a walk on a leash is better than not walk at all.And there's a case to be made to keep dogs aggressive or hyperactive, locked so that they don't frighten wildlife or other hikers. It is also only common decency to pick up after your dog, no matter where you go. Garbage in, garbage out.

Morris Island conservation area

This is a quiet haven along the Ottawa River, near the port of FitzRoy, about an hour west of downtown--47 hectares of islands connected rather perspectives and walkways, signage, at the end of a winding driveway. This quiet area of the Park offers wide substances trails and stronger side paths that run around roots and rocks and quiet river bays of the past. And there's plenty of elevation.

Dogs must be blocked, according to a Web site, although there is no such warning posted at the entrance and the site is defective. On a weekday recently and my dog were the only users, although this area is apparently a favourite destination for hikers-dog Dog or not local., worth a visit.(Be sure to keep your pet out of treacherous currents around the Islands).

Route Louis-Joseph-Papineau

On the other side of the capital, this trail is situated outside the village of Papineauville, in Saint-André-Avellin, approximately 95 kilometres from Ottawa. during the peaceful countryside offers a 20-kilometre Trek past sculptures, gazebos, a sports field and viewing platforms with elevated privileges. For track details (and a warm support) can be found in the book of Haynes. And, best of all news, dogs are admitted to trot along with you, unleashed and unrestricted.

Sentier Des Montagnes Noires

This is another trail Quebec West-friendly dog, this one near the village of Ripon, just beyond Thurso. This trekking downrange, also described in detail in the book of Haynes, Ben is signed, offers great views of the surrounding hills and also, if the sky is clear, a taste of the hills skiing at Mont Tremblant. Signage, rugged in parts, you can leave your pet too out of here, the lead.

- - -

This is a short list (and incomplete) in an area with an abundance of slopes of the desert.

The trail of Cataraqui 19 kilometers blocks of Chaffey, another Street Rails-to-trails, welcomes unleashed dogs. the same is true of the shortest Rock Dunder, that is beyond Smiths Falls, and describes in the book of Haynes. But in some places, the rules are ambiguous. Unleashed dogs are generally not recommended, although it may not be a sign given at the point of departure--outside of the Earth NCC, at least.

The course safer, more responsible, is always to bring a leash, summon your dog when you meet another hiker and be sure to fido don't chase each woodland creature that happens to be--or there won't be much left to to appreciate nature.

Better yet, the next time you might get a cat.

The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking

The Pros and Cons of Hitch HikingWith Eric Clapton's valuable assistance, Waters takes the concept album to new heights on this 1984 masterpiece, his first LP after leaving Pink Floyd. Each of the 12 songs represents a scene of a surreal dream (nightmare?), and Waters brilliantly captures the pendulum of emotions. Periods of serenity and clarity accompany frenzied and distorted passages of chaos and moments of great irony and humor. Along the journey, Waters confronts murderous Arabs in Germany, a steamy sexual liaison, mundane family life, bikers, truckers, housewives, and strangers. He sucks you into his vision by blurring the lines between what's real and what's part of the dream. Meanwhile, his use of recurring themes gives the work cohesion. As the mood shifts, Clapton's guitar perfectly accents Waters's story, whether with fiery electric explosions or delicate acoustic touches. -- Marc Greilsamer
